Perhaps "classy" isn't the word you'd expect to describe a show set in a Melbourne brothel and centred on five female escorts, but kudos to the writers and producers of Australian drama Satisfaction who have managed to make the series both edgy and tasteful.

Australian audiences have welcomed its refreshingly honest approach - albeit on a pay-TV network - with critics praising its integrity, grittiness, groundbreaking subject matter, confronting social taboos and its efforts in dispelling the myth that prostitutes have to be socially dysfunctional.

After the first season's shock finale, the girls at 232 attempt to pick up the pieces of their personal lives as their relationships are put to the test, and their futures in question. While "raunch" has become the show's forte, with frequent sex scenes and nudity, it still takes a backseat to the women and their lives. As always, sex scenes may be explicit, but never gratuitous.

There is no denying that the ensemble cast has largely contributed to the success of the show, notably Kestie Marassi as the feisty Natalie, and Alison Whyte, who recently won a silver Logie for her portrayal of sex worker Lauren.

Perhaps the only downside of the show is its limited accessibility, but if you are a Foxtel subscriber, it is most definitely worth a peek.

Satisfaction returns to Showcase on Tuesday, December 2, at 8:30pm.
