Editorial Review
Eli Stone (Jonny Lee Miller) is a young, successful lawyer, newly engaged to his boss's daughter, with a large apartment overlooking the lights of San Francisco. This alone is not a new premise, and indeed, on first glance Eli is a stereotypical white, male American television character. That is, until he becomes plagued by George Michael's infectious song 'Faith', which climaxes in him hallucinating a performance by the singer himself in the foyer of the smarmy legal practice where he works. It turns out Eli has an inoperable brain aneurysm, which causes him to experience paranoia and strange visions.Eli battles both this, his fiancee's reaction to his illness, and the realisation that his father - who he'd always assumed was a dubious, alcoholic figure - suffered the same affliction. In this instalment, Eli chooses to represent a woman claiming a common vaccination caused her son to develop autism, a situation made more difficult because Eli's firm is also representing the accused pharmaceutical company.
Eli Stone is like the equally quirky Boston Legal, which makes it all the more of a shame that the US ABC network recently announced the show's cancellation. Don't let this turn you off, though; George Michael's cameo alone makes it worthwhile. Miller is also excellent as Eli, and courtesy of the effects of his illness and the curious legal cases he takes on, this program will make for some decent summer viewing.
Eli Stone premieres on the Seven Network on Tuesday, December 2, at 8:30pm."
