Editorial Review
For many, our only experience with the enigmatic oyster is long after it's been plucked from its bed, when it arrives plump and dressed on our plate in a restaurant. But now lovers of these succulent bivalves can delve behind the scenes at the Barilla Bay Oyster Farm, located just minutes from Hobart city. Expert guides will show you how Barilla Bay grows its oysters from tiny spat to full maturity, and will explain the importance of tides and weather, Tasmania's environment, and how the company processes and packages its oysters. And of course, no tour would be complete without sampling the goods; take the opportunity to savour Barilla Bay's deliciously fresh oysters at the conclusion of the tour. "
If your hunger for oysters still isn't satisfied, drop in to the Barilla Bay Restaurant. Enjoy some of the state's freshest produce and premium wines while looking out over the majestic scenery of Barilla Bay. Barilla Bay Oyster Farm is currently operating tours and tastings on Sundays from 12pm, but keep in mind this is subject to change, particularly in summer. Tours cost $12.50 per adult, which includes a 30 to 40 minute shore-based tour plus an oyster tasting. Bookings are essential, phone (03) 6248 5458.
