Editorial Review
Kate Bradley chose her property just south of Swansea in 1980 for the view – a magnificent panoramic sweep of Great Oyster Bay through to the Hazards Range on Freycinet Peninsula and, somewhere in the distance, New Zealand. It’s about the only thing that hasn’t changed since. She started by planting a few raspberry canes and strawberry runners. Then built a dam and planted more. Then a few more and different varieties. And, with her own hands, built a house, a kitchen for jam production, and a small retail outlet. Next she started making ice-creams and berry wines and the retail outlet morphed into a cafe until, today, Kate’s Berry Farm and Dessert Cafe has become a must-stop spot for thousands of locals and visitors every year.
As the name implies, apart from tea and coffee, real old-fashioned milkshakes and her own wines, the cafe sells nothing but desserts – ice-creams studded with chunks of berries; waffles and crepes with lashings of seasonal berries; fluffy fresh scones by the truckload with her homemade berry jams; and a chocolate strawberry cheesecake so heavenly rich it should be posted on the glycaemic danger list. It’s pure, unadulterated indulgence, gastronomic sinfulness, but legal and all quite wonderful.

Annabel: I love Kate's jams they are truly yummy. Her deserts are really good too. (24 July 2008)
