Editorial Review
Cygnet is a little country town about 40 minutes drive from Hobart. Apparently it's very scenic and the people are all super friendly. Oh yeah, and they have an annual festival where a whole lot of blues and roots artists get together and go crazy. And by crazy, we mean they perform on stage and the crowds applaud politely.
One of the big drawcards at this year's event is Andrew McKenna. Focusing on Celtic tradition, he combines spoken word and music to draw listeners in. An award-winning journalist, he won the Pat Glover Memorial Storytelling Award in 2006. This comes as no real surprise for anyone who has caught his unique shows.
Andrew Winton plays a variety of strange and obscure instruments. Have you ever heard of a seven-string Wintonbeast? Exactly. Based in Western Australia, he uses his leftfield instruments to make original blues, roots and gospel music, and has released three albums to date, the most recent being 2008's Surface Tension.
Cygnet is Tasmania's premier folk and world music event, and has been running annually since 1982. Spread over three days, it's a must see for anyone wanting to check out Tasmania's incredible natural environment and hear some quality music.
