The line-up for the 2008 Falls Festival is looking might healthy. Scotland's Franz Ferdinand may be headlining, but there's an all-star line-up of internationals riding shotgun. You've got The Hives, The Kooks, Mystery Jets - all the guitars and indie action you can realistically cram into a given day.

Franz Ferninand's much anticipated third album is due for release 29 January and is already attracting huge attention. Reports coming out of the British media are raving about the funky bass lines, vintage synth melodies and nods to acts like Can and The Rolling Stones. Apparently the guys decided to go with a more 'pop' sound this time round.

The Hives are another festival favourite. They recently completed their rolling international jaunt for The Black And White Album, and are now back in Sweden working on a new release. That fifth studio album may still be a while away, but you can hear some early samples on the group's Australian tour. The suits may have changed since their breakthrough success in 2001, but their particular brand of garage rock is still go.

As usual, Falls Festival simultaneously takes place in Tasmania and Victoria. Whichever one you attend, there's more than enough internationals and indie rock to see in the New Year.
