Editorial Review
Just off Elizabeth Street Mall is the Central Bar and Caf??, a popular spot to catch a bit of sport and a grab yourself a decent lunch which won't break your wallet. Known for televising all the major games on its big screen, this bar can get a little rowdy on weekends, but that's all part of the charm. While the pokie machines may not add much to the character, they do add variety to the clientele, meaning the Central attracts everyone from a lunch time, business crowd, to the older, pokie set and sports fans.
Formerly the Ship Hotel (the original signage is still outside), the Central has seen many incarnations in the almost 200 years it has been standing. The upper floor now houses guest rooms (many of whom can be found in the bar downstairs when not out seeing the sights), while the bar downstairs has recently received a facelift to sport modern furnishings, comfy bar stools (you'll be making friends with these) and a new marble bar top. The bar itself proudly pours a variety of beers - VB, Carlton Draught and Stella to name a few. Snacks like pizzas, wedges and dips can also be had at most times of the day.
The wine list comprises mostly Australian varietals, with the addition of a few New Zealand drops. Most are available by the glass and very moderately priced. You could even afford a bottle of French Champagne without hocking a kidney.
