Salamanca Markets

Editorial Review

Imagine having a conversation about apples with the person who actually grew the apple. Meeting the people who grow the food is just one of the many reasons to visit Tassie’s favourite weekend offering.

Editorial Review

Saturdays 8.30am - 3pm
Salamanca Place, Hobart

After spending another gruelling working week in this increasingly complicated world of ours, why not get back to the simple things in life with a visit to the Salamanca Market? Famed for being a place where people create, make or grow what they sell, the Salamanca way of doing things is a great example of why the mainland folks are so jealous of that purity thing Tasmania does so well.

Once you've filled your recyclable calico bag with organic fruit and vegies (so loved and nurtured the farmers sometimes name them), it's time to grab a coffee and take a stroll among more than 300 stalls spanning Tasmanian-made art, crafts, clothing and jewellery from materials including hand-worked glass, ceramics, Tasmanian timbers and hand spun wool. And what market experience is complete without a leisurely rummage through boxes of collectibles, toys, records and books, racks of pre-loved clothing and unusual antiques?

And once you've delighted in purchasing those authentic Huey Lewis and the News Raybans complimenting the bargain priced saxophone you found in an old box, it's time to join the busker of your choice!

The busker scene at Salamanca is as colourful as it is varied - there's everything from blues guitarists to classic violinists, barber shop quartets and ballad busting baritones, making for great entertainment and a unique cultural experience.

A leisurely Saturday spent at the Salamanca Market is an exercise in rejuvenation, a great sense of community and an Aladdin's Cave worth of treasures to be found - better known as 'the great unwind', Tassie-style.
