Editorial Review

17 - 21 November, 2007

Since first opening on a West End stage in 1981, Cats has become one of the biggest musical hits of all time. Now ExitLeft Productions is bringing Andrew Lloyd Webber's award-winning tale to Hobart.

Based on poetry from T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, Andrew Lloyd Webber's enduring musical has previously won seven assorted Tony Awards as well as the title of musical of the year at the 1981 Laurence Olivier Awards.

Sit back and watch the Jellicle cats as they come together to celebrate through song. They are also eagerly awaiting the decision of their leader, Old Deuteronomy, who will soon choose which one of them will be reborn into a new life. But, of course, things go wrong when Old Deuteronomy is kidnapped. The clowder of cats is in trouble, and drama and chaos follow.

The cast includes Michelle Howell, Michael Lampard, Nicole Simms, Christopher Waterhouse and Craig Wellington. It also stars Debra Byrne (Sunset Boulevard, Les Miserables) in the role of Grizabella, a former glamour cat who is now worn out and being shunned by the rest of the tribe. This production features more than 100 dancers, actors and musicians as well as a 200-strong choir.

Hanna: I'm sorry, but I felt dissapointed with this production. Let me say first, the set looked great and the orchestra was magnificent - Gina Bashfood is a genius! However the singing was muddy and the words were far from clear making it hard to understand.Debra Byrne ruined the signature song. With the orchestra and lights building up to a big note, she failed to deliver it and left me quite dissapointed. Great singing from some of the male performers and wonderful dancing. Not value for ticket money. (25 October 2007)
