Editorial Review
5 September - 17 November, 2007While Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist Sigmund Freud (as pictured in Sigmund Freud at his desk, 1914, by Max Pollak, courtesy Freud Museum, London) is best known for his work with psychoanalysis and his theories of the unconscious mind, he was also an ardent collector. With an intense passion for ancient history, archaeology and anthropology, he built up an extremely diverse collection of antiquities. Take a wander through the mind of one of the most important and innovative psychiatrists of modern times in this display of Freud's curious possessions.
Sigmund Freud's Collection: An Archaeology of the Mind offers a rare look into the man as a collector, art connoisseur and thinker. An eclectic mix of classical, Egyptian, oriental, near-Eastern and South American pieces, the exhibition showcases Freud's broad taste and highlights how his studies of art ultimately influenced his theories. The works are presented alongside film and photographic material, including the home movies of Anna Freud, his youngest daughter, who also made significant contributions to psychology.
The exhibition, which reveals the parallels between archaeology and psychoanalysis, is curated by Dr Janine Burke, author of The Gods of Freud: Sigmund Freud's Art Collection, a study of Freud's collection and its role in his life and practice.
